Are ceramic air fryers safe?
Ceramic is the answer most brands give to the coating question. It is a real answer — but “ceramic” is a marketing word, not a chemistry one, so here is what is actually verifiable and what you give up.

The direct answer
Yes — a ceramic-coated air fryer basket is safe to cook in, and it is the practical answer if you want to avoid the PTFE/PFAS family entirely. Two cautions. “Ceramic” is a marketing term rather than a defined material, so the claim worth checking is the specific one — PFAS-free — not the word ceramic itself. And ceramic coatings are still coatings: they release well when new and lose that release sooner than a well-treated PTFE basket, which is a durability trade, not a safety one.
Almost every air fryer sold as non-toxic is sold on the word ceramic. It has become the category’s shorthand for “not Teflon,” and searches for ceramic air fryers, non-toxic baskets and PFAS-free cooking all land in the same place. The word does real work — but it is worth knowing exactly how much, because unlike stainless steel or borosilicate glass, ceramic is not a single, defined thing you can point at.
What “ceramic coating” means on an air fryer basket
On a basket, ceramic is a nonstick surface applied to metal that is not built from the fluoropolymer family — the group that includes PTFE, the material sold under the Teflon brand. Manufacturers use the word to signal that difference. What they do not do is publish a formulation, and there is no legal definition of a “ceramic” pan coating in the way there is for, say, a grade of stainless steel. The word alone tells you what a coating is not, and nothing about how it was made.
So we ignore the word and read the specific claim underneath it. Cosori states that the TurboBlaze’s basket and crisper plate carry a PFAS-free ceramic coating, and publishes the same claim for the stainless-bodied Iconic — where it goes further and says the cooking surfaces are free of both PFAS and BPA. Ninja describes its crisper plates and Cook and Crisp baskets as ceramic-coated, nonstick, and PTFE- and PFOA-free. Those are specific, written, checkable statements from the manufacturer, and they are worth far more than the word ceramic on a box.
Why “PFOA-free” is not the badge people think it is
If a listing’s headline safety claim is “PFOA-free,” treat it as decoration. In 2006 the EPA invited eight major manufacturers into the PFOA Stewardship Program, which committed them to working toward eliminating PFOA and related long-chain chemicals from emissions and products by 2015. The EPA records that all participating companies met those goals, with final reports submitted in early 2016. A cookware coating sold in the United States today is overwhelmingly likely to be PFOA-free whether or not the box says so, because the industry stopped using it roughly a decade ago.
PFAS-free is the claim that still carries information, because PTFE itself belongs to the PFAS family. Instant is unusually direct about this in its own product disclosures: its nonstick food-contact surfaces contain PTFE, and its disclosure language notes that although they are inert solids, PTFE and its relatives are classified as PFAS substances and must be disclosed. That is not a scandal — it is a normal, well-regulated cookware coating — but it is the difference between a machine that answers the coating question and one that does not.
The state disclosure rule that makes brands answer
California’s AB 1200 requires cookware makers to disclose intentionally added chemicals in food-contact surfaces and handles, and the practical result is that most large brands now publish a state cookware disclosure page. Cosori maintains one; Instant publishes its disclosure alongside the product itself. If you want to check any machine — one of ours or anyone else’s — that page is the fastest honest route, because it is a legal disclosure rather than marketing copy. A brand with no such page is a brand you are taking on trust.
The trade-off: release life
Here is the part the marketing skips. A ceramic basket releases beautifully when new. Over a couple of years of real use it tends to lose that release sooner than a PTFE basket treated the same way, and it starts wanting a light film of oil on foods that previously needed none. That is the consistent pattern in aggregated owner reports across brands rather than something we have measured in a lab — we do not test coatings for wear, and nobody publishing a “best non-toxic air fryer” list does either.
The practical consequence is that habits matter more on a ceramic machine, not less. Skip aerosol cooking sprays, whose propellants and additives bake into a film that grips the surface; use silicone or wooden tools; and wash the basket before residue carbonises rather than after. If you want no coating at all
Ceramic is the compromise: a coating that avoids the fluoropolymer family. The alternatives remove the coating from the equation entirely. Borosilicate glass — the Ninja Crispi cooks inside glass containers Ninja describes as being without the forever chemicals PFAS and PTFE — puts nothing coated near the food at all. An oven-style stainless machine such as the Cuisinart TOA-70 air-fries on a bare stainless mesh rack, so there is nothing to wear off. Everyone in this category says they tested twenty air fryers. We have not lab-tested any of these, and we say so. What we did instead: compiled the published specifications — wattage, capacity, materials — worked out what each machine actually costs to run at the national electricity rate, read the manuals and owner reviews, and scored each one against a published rubric. The scores are judgments from documented research — not measurements we took, because we do not have a lab and we will not pretend we do.
