Is an air fryer basket dishwasher safe?
Almost always yes, by the manufacturer's own manual. It is also almost always the wrong choice, because dishwasher safe means the part will survive, not that the coating will.
We earn a commission when you buy through our Amazon links, at no extra cost to you. It never changes a verdict, and we say so when the cheaper product is the better buy. How this works.
Yes, almost certainly — and we would still hand-wash it.Nearly every basket and crisper plate sold today is dishwasher safe according to its own manual, including every machine in our registry whose maker publishes a claim either way. But “dishwasher safe” is a durability statement about the part, not a recommendation about the coating. It means the basket will come out intact. It does not mean the nonstick or ceramic layer on it is unaffected, and across a few hundred cycles it very much is.
There are two real exceptions where the dishwasher costs you nothing at all, and they are both about material rather than brand: glass and uncoated stainless. If there is no coating, there is nothing for the dishwasher to wear. That is the whole rule, and it is why this question has a different answer depending on which machine you bought rather than which logo is on it.
What “dishwasher safe” actually certifies
A dishwasher-safe mark means a part has been tested to survive dishwasher conditions without warping, cracking, corroding or releasing its fixings. Those conditions are harsher than most people picture: water well above hand-washing temperature, a long cycle, and detergents that are strongly alkaline and mildly abrasive by design — that is how they lift baked-on food without anyone scrubbing.
Nonstick and ceramic coatings are thin films bonded to metal. Repeated alkaline, hot, high-pressure cycles are not what shortens them in one go; they are what shortens them over time, which is why the damage never looks like an event. It looks like a basket that used to release eggs and now does not, then one with dull patches, then one that is flaking — the progression we document in why air fryer baskets peel. The dishwasher is rarely the only cause, but it is the most avoidable one, alongside aerosol cooking spray.
What must never go in, whatever the basket does
- The main unit. It contains the element, the fan motor and the control board. This should be obvious and it is the single most expensive mistake available here.
- Anything with the control panel attached, including the lid assembly on lid-style machines.
- Oven-style accessories with wooden or painted handles, which are common in toaster-oven accessory sets.
- Anything the manual specifically excludes.Rotisserie spits and forks are frequently hand-wash-only even when the basket is not — worth checking if you own a rotisserie machine.
What we can confirm, from the machines we cover
Rather than make claims about brands we cannot check, here is what the makers publish for products in our own registry. Where a maker publishes nothing, the row says so.
| Machine | Food-contact surface | Dishwasher | Our advice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ninja AF141 | Nonstick | Published dishwasher-safe | Hand-wash to make the coating last |
| Chefman TurboFry 8 Qt | Nonstick | Published dishwasher-safe | Hand-wash to make the coating last |
| Cosori TurboBlaze 6 Qt | PFAS-free ceramic | Not published in our material | Hand-wash; ceramic wears faster than PTFE |
| Ninja Crispi | Glass containers | Glass and stainless, no coating | Dishwasher freely — nothing to wear |
| Cuisinart Air Fryer Toaster Oven | Stainless mesh basket, no coating | Uncoated metal | Dishwasher freely |
| Silicone liners (PINTAUR) | Silicone | Published dishwasher-safe | Dishwasher freely |
The pattern in that last column is the argument of our uncoated appliance roundup arriving from an unexpected direction: the machines with no coating in the food path are also the only ones where this question has an easy answer. A coating you have to protect from your own dishwasher is a maintenance obligation that glass and stainless simply do not carry.
The two-minute alternative
Hand-washing a basket is not the chore people imagine, as long as you do it at the right moment. The method:
- When the cook finishes, tip any fat out and fill the basket with hot water and a drop of washing-up liquid. Leave it while you eat.
- Afterwards, wipe with a soft sponge or cloth. Almost nothing needs scrubbing after a twenty-minute soak.
- For burnt-on residue, soak longer rather than scrubbing harder. Never use a wire pad, steel wool or a scouring powder on a coated surface.
- Dry it before it goes back in. Trapped moisture is how the metal under a chipped coating starts to corrode.
The full routine, including the chamber roof above the basket that almost nobody cleans, is in how to clean an air fryer— and that chamber deposit is the one genuine fire risk in the machine, which we go through in can an air fryer catch fire.
“But I bought it because it was dishwasher safe”
That is a fair complaint, and the honest reply is that the claim is true — it just answers a narrower question than it appears to. If convenience was genuinely the reason you bought the machine, then use the dishwasher and accept that the coating has a shorter life; a basket is a replaceable part on most models, and your time has value. What we object to is people doing it for years and then concluding the brand made a bad basket.
And if you want the convenience and the longevity, the answer is not a better detergent. It is a food path with no coating in it.
The short version
Dishwasher safe: yes, nearly always. Good for the basket: no, if it has a coating on it. Never put the main unit in, ever. And if this is the kind of thing that annoys you, the fix is to stop owning a coating — glass and uncoated stainless make the whole question go away.
How we picked
We did not lab-test this gear
Everyone in this category says they tested twenty air fryers. We have not lab-tested any of these, and we say so. What we did instead: compiled the published specifications — wattage, capacity, materials — worked out what each machine actually costs to run at the national electricity rate, read the manuals and owner reviews, and scored each one against a published rubric. The scores are judgments from documented research — not measurements we took, because we do not have a lab and we will not pretend we do. Where a number came from someone else's work, we name them in Sources.
