Ninja vs Philips air fryers
One brand patented the technology, the other owns the shelf. On published specifications the gap is not where the marketing suggests it is.

The short answer
For most US buyers, Ninja. It publishes more power and more capacity per dollar, it states what its baskets are coated with, and its parts and replacement baskets are easy to get here. Philips built the category and its Rapid Air machines still cook well, but you are paying a premium for the brand that invented it rather than for a measurable advantage — and on the coating question, which a lot of buyers now care about most, Philips does not publish an answer.
Philips is not a challenger brand in this category; it is the reason the category exists. Its Rapid Air design — the patented starfish-shaped base that swirls hot air around the food — is what the rest of the industry has been iterating on since. Ninja arrived far later, priced aggressively, sized generously, and now dominates the American shelf. So the comparison is not quite fair on either side: one brand is defending an invention, the other is defending a market share, and the buyer wants neither. The buyer wants dinner.

The cost row is the one nobody else publishes, so here is the arithmetic in full: watts divided by 1,000, multiplied by hours, multiplied by your electricity rate. A 1,750-watt Ninja for 20 minutes is 1.75 × 0.333 = 0.58 kWh; the 1,400-watt Philips is 0.47 kWh. At the US average residential rate those are roughly ten and eight cents. Put your own rate in on what an air fryer costs to run — and note that the cheaper-to-run machine is cheaper because it is less powerful, not because it is more efficient. Lower wattage generally means a longer cook, which claws the difference back.
Capacity: the difference that actually shows up at dinner
Philips measures in litres and in kilograms of food; Ninja measures in quarts and in pounds of fries. Translated into the same language, the mainstream Philips L sits at about 4.3 US quarts against the Ninja’s 5, and Philips is honest enough to say it suits three to four servings. That is a real gap for a household of four, and it is the gap that decides most purchases, because batch cooking is the single most common reason an air fryer ends up unused in a cupboard.
It is not a gap Philips cannot close — its XL machines go to 6.2 litres and beyond — but at those sizes you are into Ninja dual-basket money, and a dual-basket does something a bigger single basket cannot: cook two foods two ways and finish them together. The coating question, which is where the gap is widest
Ninja describes its crisper plates and baskets as ceramic-coated, nonstick, and PTFE- and PFOA-free, and repeats that on accessory listings rather than in one marketing page. Philips publishes thorough performance specifications — Rapid Air, wattage, capacity, dishwasher-safe parts, the two-year guarantee — but in the US documentation we read it makes no PFAS-free or PTFE-free claim about the basket.
That is not evidence of a problem. Regulators consider these coatings safe at the temperatures air fryers reach, and we say so plainly in are air fryers toxic. Parts, service and the unglamorous stuff
An air fryer basket is a consumable on a five-year view: coatings wear, and a machine you can re-basket is a machine you keep. Ninja sells crisper plates and replacement baskets as individual line items in the US, which is the practical reason we tend to favour it for households that cook most nights. Philips supports its machines properly too, with a two-year worldwide guarantee published on the product documentation, but sourcing a specific replacement basket in the US is a less certain exercise. When Philips is the right call
Three cases, and they are real rather than consolation prizes. If you cook for one or two and value a smaller footprint, the Philips L is a genuinely compact machine with a well-sorted basket and a two-year guarantee behind it. If you are outside the US, the parts and service argument inverts — Philips’ network is global in a way Ninja’s is not. And if you already own a Philips and are wondering whether to switch: do not. The verdict
Ninja for most American kitchens: more capacity per dollar, more published power, a stated coating position and easier parts. Philips if you want the original design in a compact footprint with a longer published guarantee, and you are not shopping on the coating question.
