Air fryer vs pressure cooker
They are opposites, not rivals: one removes moisture to make things crisp, one traps it to make things tender. Which you should own first depends entirely on what you cook.

The direct answer
They do opposite jobs, so “which is better” is the wrong question. An air fryer drives moisture off to make food crisp and brown; a pressure cooker traps moisture under pressure to make tough things tender fast. If you cook chicken, chips, frozen food and vegetables, buy the air fryer first. If you cook stews, beans, tough cuts, rice and stock, buy the pressure cooker first. If you genuinely do both, a combo machine is a reasonable compromise that is slightly worse at each.
This is the appliance question of the last decade, and it gets answered badly because people compare the two machines on speed and price rather than on physics. The difference is not a matter of degree. An air fryer is a dry-heat machine: it works by removing water from the surface of food so it can brown. A pressure cooker is a wet-heat machine: it raises the boiling point of water so food cooks hotter and faster while staying saturated. One makes things crisp. The other makes things soft. Neither can do the other's job.

Which to buy first, decided properly
Look at what you cooked last week, not what you intend to cook. If the honest list is frozen food, chicken pieces, chips, vegetables and leftovers, the air fryer will get used four times a week and the pressure cooker twice a month — buy the air fryer, and our best air fryers roundup is where to start. If the honest list is chilli, curry, soups, dried beans, rice and cheap cuts turned tender, the pressure cooker earns its counter space and the air fryer will be a novelty. Most households in practice skew heavily toward the first list, which is why air fryers outsell pressure cookers — but “most households” is not an argument about yours.
Running cost, and why the pressure cooker is not the winner people expect
Pressure cookers have a reputation for efficiency, and it is deserved in one specific way: they cook tough food dramatically faster than a pot on a hob or an oven, which saves real energy on long cooks. But against an air fryer they are not cheaper per session, because the air fryer's sessions are short. A twenty-minute air fryer cook is roughly eight to ten cents at the U.S. average residential electricity rate; a pressure cooker session including the time it takes to come up to pressure and release is usually longer, so ten to fifteen cents is the realistic bracket. The combo machine question
Machines that pressure cook and air fry in one unit exist and are genuinely popular, and the honest verdict is: they work, and they are slightly worse at both jobs than dedicated machines. The compromise is mechanical — an air-frying lid on a deep pressure pot puts the fan further from the food than a basket does, in a taller, narrower cavity, so crisping is decent rather than excellent. In exchange you get one appliance instead of two, which in a small kitchen is a genuinely decisive advantage. If your counter is the constraint rather than your budget, a combo is the right answer and you should not feel talked out of it.
If you can only have one appliance on the counter
Buy the air fryer, for one unsentimental reason: the pressure cooker's jobs can all be done, more slowly, in a pot you already own. Stew, beans, rice and stock have been cooked on hobs for centuries; the pressure cooker makes them faster and easier, which is a real benefit but a benefit of degree. The air fryer's job — fast, crisp, browned food without heating a full-size oven — has no equivalent in equipment most kitchens already have.
