Air fryer vs halogen oven: what changed, and which to buy now
The halogen oven got there first — a fan, a bowl and a bright bulb. The air fryer took the same idea and made it easier to live with. Here is the honest comparison.

The short answer
Buy the air fryer. It crisps at least as well, it is far easier to clean, and it is the format manufacturers still actively develop — which means better machines and available spare parts. The halogen oven keeps two real advantages: you can see everything through the glass bowl, and the round bowl often takes a larger single item than a basket of similar rating.
Before air fryers took over the counter, the halogen oven was the countertop convection machine people bought. The design is simple and rather elegant: a glass bowl, a lid containing a halogen bulb and a fan, and food on a wire rack in the middle. The bulb provides radiant heat, the fan moves it around, and the food browns. If that sounds familiar, it should — an air fryer does the same job with a metal element in a smaller, enclosed drawer.
The two are close enough relatives that the comparison comes down to practicalities rather than cooking theory: what is easier to load, easier to clean, easier to store, and still being made.

Where the halogen oven still wins
Two genuine advantages, and neither is nostalgia. First, visibility: the entire cooking chamber is glass, so you watch food brown from every angle without opening anything. Second, shape. A round bowl with a rack suspended in the middle often accommodates a larger single item — a small whole chicken, say — than a basket of comparable stated capacity, because the food sits in open space with air all around it rather than in a drawer. If cooking one big thing is your main use case, this is a real point in the halogen oven's favour.
Where the air fryer wins, and why it took over
Handling and cleaning, mostly. A halogen oven's lid is heavy, contains the electrics and the bulb, and gets extremely hot — so every time you check or turn food you are lifting a hot, awkward object and putting it somewhere. Air fryer drawers slide out, pause the cook automatically and slide back. It sounds minor and it is the difference between an appliance you use on a Tuesday and one you use on a Sunday.
Cleaning follows the same pattern. A large glass bowl is bulky in a sink and does not fit many dishwashers; an air fryer basket usually does. And because the halogen bulb is a consumable that eventually fails, ownership has a maintenance element that air fryers don't — which matters more now that the category has shrunk and spares are harder to find.
That last point is the practical clincher. Air fryers are where the development money goes: dual zones, PFAS-free ceramic baskets, better controls. Halogen ovens have largely stopped advancing. Buying into an actively supported category is worth something on an appliance you expect to keep for years — the same argument we make in our brand guide.
What about the glass air fryers?

For a new purchase today, the air fryer — for handling, cleaning, and the simple fact that the category is still being improved. Pick from the main roundup, or the small picks if counter space is the constraint that drew you to a compact machine in the first place. If you already own a halogen oven that works, there is no urgent reason to replace it; use it until the bulb goes, then buy an air fryer.
